Geophysical Fluid Dynamics

EPSc 557

L19

Fundamentals of geophysical fluid dynamics with emphasis on physical understanding of various processes and phenomena. Conceptual framework of fluid dynamics followed byanalysis of fluid flow of inviscid and viscous fluids, hydrodynamic instabilities, turbulence, thermal convection, flow in rotating fluids, and sound and shock waves. Applications to plate tectonics, mantle convection, diapirism, core dynamics, impacts and other processes. Silly Putty and other fluids used extensively for demonstrations.
