The part of this image that is
various shades of gray is a backscattered-electron
image of the 50-100 µm grain-size
fraction of an Apollo 16 soil sample. Dr. Zeigler is classifying
different types of glass occurring in the
sample and seeking a rare type of particle
called high-alumina, silica-poor (HASP)
glass. The colored 'circles' represent
different types of glass particles that
will be the subjects of subsequent chemical
analysis with our new JEOL 8200 electron
microprobe and by secondary-ion mass spectrometry.
