The hazards of doing field work
in Antarctica. E&PS graduate student Mitchell
Barklage took these photos after the DC-3T
on which he was traveling crashed
during a failed takeoff from a remote research
site in January. There were no serious
injuries among the 10 passengers and crew,
who had to wait 20 hours to be rescued
by other planes. Mitch was part of a team
deploying seismometers and global positioning
system (GPS) trackers. The crash site
is about 550 miles from the main American
logistical hub at McMurdo.
