The object shown here is an Inuit-inspired
stone figure known as an inukshuk, meaning "likeness of a
person." This particular inushuk is made of blue
glass and black anorthosite from the Lac St-Jean
Complex, Quebec. The Inuit make these figures
in different forms and for different purposes:
to show directions to travellers, to warn of impending danger,
to mark a place of
respect, or to act as helpers in the hunting
of caribou. A contemporary version of the inushuk, named Ilanaaq,
has been adopted as the
symbol for the 2010
Vancouver Winter Olympics
Thanks to Prof. Dymek for loan of the sculpture.
