A new meteorite specimen for our
museum - A piece (cut, polished, etched)
of the the Canyon Diablo (IAB-MG) iron
meteorite from Coconino County, Arizona.
The Widmanstätten
pattern is prominent. The round, brown inclusions are composed
of the iron-sulfide mineral troilite.
The impact of the Canyon Diablo meteoroid
50,000 years ago formed Meteor
Crater. More than 30 tons of the meteorite have been collected
since 1891. Specimen on loan from the Center
for Meteorite Studies, Arizona State University (Thanks,
Mini). Photo by Randy Korotev.
