This sandstone is at the shoreline
level at Pictured Rocks
National Lakeshore on
Lake Superior. Glacial pebbles and cobbles
along the beach settle into low spots in
the sandstone. Then, wave action causes
them to abrade their way down into the
sandstone, making potholes. Most of the small rocks
are igneous rocks that are harder than
the sandstone.
