Sixty years ago, on Feb. 12, 1947, the largest meteorite to strike Earth in recorded history impacted in the remote Sikhote-Alin Mountains of Russia. Thousands of fragments totaling more than 30 metric tons of the Sikhote-Alin meteorite, a class IIAB iron, have been recovered. Most, like the 587-gram specimen in the photo, have distinctive shapes with lots of regmaglypts. See a fascinating historical documentary video of the discovery of the crater and recovery of the meteorite.
