We
know what the round thing on the left is, but what about the
one on the right? Like many earth sciences departments, we
get a lot of inquiries of the type "What is this thing?"
Often we can't tell. This photo was sent by someone who said
"This rock (or whatever it is) was found in the mountains
of Idaho." It looks like some kind of concretion, with
casts of 2 others to the right. Both the sphere and the matrix
look more igneous than sedimentary, however, and concretions
don't occur in igneous rocks. What is it? We don't know. More
