We know what the round thing on the left is, but what about the one on the right? Like many earth sciences departments, we get a lot of inquiries of the type "What is this thing?" Often we can't tell. This photo was sent by someone who said "This rock (or whatever it is) was found in the mountains of Idaho." It looks like some kind of concretion, with casts of 2 others to the right. Both the sphere and the matrix look more igneous than sedimentary, however, and concretions don't occur in igneous rocks. What is it? We don't know. More photos here: 176 178 181
